From the museum label: In the Battle of Ostia (849) the troops of Leo IV met the Saracen hordes in combat. Here the miraculous victory of the papal army is celebrated and allusion is made to Leo X's crusade against the infidels. In all the historical episodes frescoed here, the pope has the features of the reigning pope, Leo X.
