1942, Rudolf Levy, Fiamma -- Pitti Palace (Florence)
From the museum label (translated): Fiamma is a girl of Swedish nationality who posed for Levy in Florence in 1942. We know nothing more about her, perhaps a young exile daughter of the painter's friends. The portrait belonged to the collector Gualtiero Loria (1909-1979), a friend of the artist, who actively contributed to the organization of the first exhibition of works by Rudolf Levy, in 1946 in Florence. The portrait is undoubtedly among the most intense made by Levy in his entire career and thus exemplifying the condition experienced by Jewish exiles, victims of the racial laws. The work was purchased by the Uffizi Galleries to represent Rudolf Levy within the collections of the Gallery of Modern Art of Palazzo Pitti.
