From the museum label: Circular paintings depicting the Virgin and Child were often commissioned to mark weddings and births, and were generally intended to adorn the residences of the city's more prosperous citizens. Lorenzo di Credi's workshop produced numerous such works, which have become enormously popular with modern collectors. The original 16th century carved and painted frame is rare and very valuable. The painting came to the Uffizi from the Ospedale di Santa Maria Nova in 1825.
