1480 (ca.), Hans Memling, Madonna and Child enthroned with angels -- Uffizi Gallery (Florence)
From the museum label: The Christ child holds a cherry while he is going to get an apple offered by the angel holding the viola. These fruits symbolize the original sin and the sacrifice of Christ for the redemption of humanity. The angel on the right is playing the harp. The painting was the centre of a triptych probably ordered by the Florentine Dominican friar Bernardo Pagagnotti. The two side panels are in the National Gallery in London.
