1540 (ca.), Bachiacca (Ubertini Francesco), Christ Before Caiaphas -- Uffizi Gallery (Florence)
From the museum label: According to Matthew (26:57-68), after Jesus was arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane, He was taken before the high priest, Caiaphas, for questioning. The painting depicts the moment after Jesus replied "You have said so" when Caiaphas asked if He were the Messiah. Furious, Caiaphas clutched his robes as if to tear them and shouted "He has uttered blasphemy!" The painting embodies Bachiacca's elegant style: while remaining true to the Florentine figurative tradition of his day, he tried to refresh the repertoire by adding elements derived from Northern European art, and specifically from Dürer and Lucas van Leyden's prints.
