1506 (ca.), Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio), Portrait of Agnolo Doni -- Uffizi Gallery (Florence)
From the museum label: On the occasion of his wedding to Maddalena Strozzi in 1504, Florentine merchant Agnolo Doni ordered these two portraits from Raphael [see the separate Portrait of Maddalena Strozzi]. Shortly thereafter he also commissioned the Holy Family tondo from Michelangelo (in this gallery), thus qualifying as one of the most important art patrons of his day. Raphael, who had only recently come to Florence, shows in these two panels that he has assimilated and even surpassed Leonardo's innovative approach to depicting figures in space, the sitters (in an oblique, three-quarters pose) feeling far more vibrant and natural than in the full-face Montefeltro portraits.
