1570 (ca.), Tintoretto (Jacopo Robusti), Portrait of a Venetian Admiral -- Uffizi Gallery (Florence)

From the museum label: The middle-aged man wears a crimson tunic painted with broad brushstrokes - suggesting the consistency of velvet - typical of Tintoretto's mature style. The window, source of light for the portrait, gives onto a seascape: this detail, in conjunction with the armour and the helmet the man is resting the hand on, has suggested that the sitter may be one of a number of leading players in the Venetian Republic's maritime affairs, for instance Sebastiano Venier or Agostino Barbarigo, or even the commander of the fortress of Souda.
