1495 (ca.), Sandro Botticelli (Alessandro Filipepi), St. Augustine in his Study -- Uffizi Gallery (Florence)

From the museum label: Intended for private devotion, this picture shows the saint writing in the privacy of his study, which is skilfully rendered in perspective and with meticulous attention paid to the detail in the depiction of its powerful classical architecture. The sheets of paper strewn across the floor at the saint's feet are intended to convey the difficulty implicit in translating divine inspiration into words.
