1495 (ca.), Vittore Carpaccio, Soldiers -- Uffizi Gallery (Florence)
From the museum label: Against a rocky background with sparse shrubs, soldiers and priests are captured in different poses and actions: looking upward, meditating, conversing. The SP(Q)R (Senatus Populus Quirites Romani) and eagle banners, both symbols of the Roman Empire, flutter from one of the peaks. The painting is the surviving fragment of a Crucifixion (or Deposition) of unknown provenance. As often in his work, Carpaccio dedicated utmost attention to the setting, from the gleaming to the clothes made of fine fabrics reflecting the diversities and wealth of the Republic of Venice.
