1506 (ca.), Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio), Portrait of Elisabetta Gonzaga -- Uffizi Gallery (Florence)
Elisabetta Gonzaga (1471-1526), the wife of Guidubaldo da Montefeltro, Duke of Urbino, was renowned for her humanist learning. The jewel on her forehead in the shape of a scorpion clutching a gemstone in its pincers may allude to her interest in astrology. Her sobre yet elegant attire and full-face pose highlight her position as a lady of rank, set in a landscape enhanced by the artist's innovative treatment of light. The picture came to Florence as part of Vittoria della Rovere's dowry in 1631 and entered the Uffizi in 1773.
