1490 (ca.), Sandro Botticelli (Alessandro Filipepi), Annunciation (detail) -- Uffizi Gallery (Florence)
From the museum label: This painting was commissioned by Benedetto di ser Francesco Guardi for the church of Santa Maria Maddalena in Borgo Pinti, in Florence, in 1489. Compared to the fresco of the Annunciation that Botticelli had painted roughly ten years earlier, this composition is more austere and filled with a spiritual tension which may well reflect the influence of Fra Girolamo Savonarola's preaching.
