1507 (ca.), Fra Bartolomeo (Bartolomeo della Porta), The Vision of St. Bernard -- Uffizi Gallery (Florence)
From the museum label: The Virgin miraculously appears to the kneeling St. Bernard, behind whom we see St. Benedict and St. Barnabas, in a scene which grips the observer with its emotional and spiritual force. This is the first work that the artist, a follower of the Dominican preacher Girolamo Savonarola, painted after taking his vows. The panel was commissioned from the artist by Bernardo del Bianco for the altar of his family chapel in the Badia Fiorentina in 1504. The harmonious composition and sacred aura of the figures were a source of inspiration for the young Raphael, who was in Florence from 1504 to 1508.
