1519 (ca.), Pontormo (Jacopo Carucci), Expulsion from Paradise -- Uffizi Gallery (Florence)
From the museum label: The action takes place in a narrow space bounded by gnarled trees in the background and is rendered more dramatic by the dark colours. Adam and Eve, in the centre, are chased by an angel holding a sword and surrounded by a cloud of light. The angel was sent by the Lord to make them leave the Garden of Eden (Gen. 3:24). To the right, the serpent with a female face, symbol of the sin the two had just committed, is coiled around a tree observing the drama that is about to conclude. The intensity of the scene reflects the influence of Dürer's prints that were circulating in Florence at the time.
