1490 (ca.), Luca Signorelli, Madonna and Child; In monochrome: St. John the Baptist with Two Prophets -- Uffizi Gallery (Florence)

From the museum label: Giorgio Vasari (1568) tells us that this painting, from the Medici villa at Castello, was painted for Lorenzo de' Medici, by whom he probably means Botticelli's patron Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de' Medici. While the two prophets and St. John the Baptist in the false frame herald the coming of the Savior, the male nudes in the background allude to the pagan era, before the Age of Law and the coming of Christ. The picture entered the Uffizi in 1779.
