1529, Bronzino (Agnolo di Cosimo), Lamentation over the Dead Christ -- Uffizi Gallery (Florence)
From the museum label: This altarpiece was painted for the Cambi Chapel in the church of Santa Trinca in Florence. The devotion to the Magdalen of the family who commissioned it explains the saint's place in the composition, her tender grief standing out in the triangle of the sacred group while her hand marking the centre of the scene draws our gaze towards Christ's pale, reclining body. A clear composition, well-defined volumes, a strong light on the figures in the foreground, and a shadowy backdrop: in the early work, Bronzino already shows many of the stylistic features that were to characterise his career.
