1526, Correggio (Antonio Allegri), The Adoration of the Child -- Uffizi Gallery (Florence)

From the museum label: The subject of the painting is based on the vision of the birth of Christ that Bridget (Birgitta) of Sweden (1303-1373) recounted in her Revelations and Prophecies. In the pale light of dawn, a beautiful and joyful Madonna kneels before the newborn Jesus, contemplating his beauty. The Child returns his mother's gaze, extending his hand the childlike gesture of trying to grasp her robe. The artist emphasized the intimate bond by placing the Child on the edge of his mother's mantle, and succeeded in conveying the loving exchange between Mary and her Son with a few simple gestures.
