1556, Paolo Veronese (Paolo Caliari), The Annunciation -- Uffizi Gallery (Florence)
From the museum label: The setting for the scene is a solemn portico with fluted columns, inspired by the architecture of Andrea Palladio. A triumphal arch in the central background gives onto a paved and tree-lined path: the hortus conclusus symbolising Mary's virginity is portrayed here as an aristocratic palace, with loggia and garden. In this early work, Veronese handles space in a theatrical manner. He balances the horizontal expansion of the canvas with the strongly vertical thrust of the huge columns and an almost telescopic rendering of perspective in the centre.
