1499, Giovanni Bellini, Sacred allegory -- Uffizi Gallery (Florence)
From the museum label: This painting arrived in the Uffizi in 1793 after an exchange with Imperial Gallery of Vienna. Traditionally thought to be by Giorgione, Crowe and Cavalcaselle's attribution to Bellini in 1871 is now universally accepted. With its striking poetic charm, this is one of the most fascinating of Italian 15th century works thanks to its complex iconography filled with figures that are hard to identify, and unclear cultural references.
