1463 (ca.), Filippo Lippi, Adoration of the Christ Child with the Young St. John the Baptist, St. Romuald, Angels, the Hands of God the Father and the Holy Ghost as a Dove -- Uffizi Gallery (Florence)
From the museum label: This picture was commissioned by Piero de' Medici, known as "Piero the Gouty", for the family cell at Camaldoli, the mother house of the monastic order founded by St. Romuald. The rocky landscape in the background, reaching right up to the sky, underscores the painting's mystical character.
Filippo Lippi was one of the Medici family's favourite painters, and indeed they were to commission several more versions of this composition from him.
