1665, Rembrandt van Rijn, A Rabbi -- Uffizi Gallery (Florence)
From the museum label: The work came to Palazzo Pitti in 1698 after the Grand Duke Cosimo III purchased it when he visited the painter's studio during his second trip to Holland in 1669, or perhaps as a gift from the Elector Palatine of Düsseldorf to the Grand Prince Ferdinand. The full-bodied brush strokes typical of Rembrandt's late activity cause the hands and spiritual face of this elderly man, whom historians have identified as a rabbi, to emerge from the semi-darkness.
