1420 (ca.), Fra Angelico, Stories from the Lives of the Holy Fathers in the Desert (Thebaid) -- Uffizi Gallery (Florence)
From the museum label: The collections of texts and stories of the Holy Fathers of the Church recount that in the first centuries of Christianity several hermits retreated into the desert near the Egyptian city of Thebes, where they led a life dedicated to prayer and asceticism. Accordingly, the word Thebaid is used to describe the depiction of a rocky landscape, in which several monks are shown pursuing various activities connected with rural life. This theme was particularly popular in Florence in the 1400s, where it was commonly depicted on rectangular wood panels. The Uffizi panel is the only known today that has survived in its integrity.
