1543, Lucas Cranach the Elder, Portraits of Martin Luther and Phillip Melanchthon -- Uffizi Gallery (Florence)

From the museum label: The panel portrays Martin Luther, the Agostinian monk who in 1517 posted his 95 theses on the door of the church of the Wittenberg castle, initiating the Protestant Reformation. The other portrait is of Phillip Melanchthon, a professor of ancient languages who in 1519 joined the reform movement begun by Luther and attempted to find common ground with the Papacy and mediated between the different groups within Protestantism. From the Villa Medici Poggio Imperiale, the painting has been in the Uffizi since 1773.
