1545, Bronzino (Agnolo di Cosimo), Portrait of Lucrezia Panciatichi -- Uffizi Gallery (Florence)
From the museum label: Devised as a companion piece to the portrait of Lucrezia's husband Bartolomeo Panciatichi (also on display here), the portrait depicts the splendid lady as though she were a statue in a niche. Her gorgeous satin gown with its pleated organza collar, her sophisticated jewellery and the precious book of hours on which she rests her hand all point to the rank and wealth of this member of the noble Pucci family, while the sacred text she is reading and the motto on her necklace reflecting God's love for man - "amour dure sans fine" - appear to allude to her staunch religious faith.
