1475 (ca.), Piero della Francesca, Federico da Montefeltro and Battista Sforza, Duke and Duchess of Urbino -- Uffizi Gallery (Florence)
From the museum label: Federico da Montefeltro (1422-1482) and his wife, Battista Sforza (1446-1472), duke and duchess of Urbino, are shown in profile, a typical device in fifteenth-century Italian portraits that recalled ancient coins and concealed the sitters' emotions. The continuity of the background landscape (the hills of Federico's domain) and the uniform light create the spatial unity of the panels. The artist's attention to the natural setting, to the details of the clothing, jewels, and faces, and to the quality of the materials was the result of his familiarity with Flemish painting. On the backs of the panels are the Triumphs of the duke and duchess.
