1911, Pablo Picasso, The Poet -- Peggy Guggenheim Collection (Venice)

This was painted in the summer of 1911 when Picasso was working closely with Georges Braque in the Pyrenees town of Céret. We do not know who "The Poet' was, and clearly the creation of likeness is at best of marginal concern to Picasso. Nonetheless, moustaches, pipes, a chairback and in general a pyramidal three-quarter length figure can be discerned. The limited, almost monochrome palette, the network of black lines and the refusal of the planes, lights and shadows to conform to a coherent, realistic definition of form or space are characteristic of Cubism at the height of its early 'analytical' phase. ‘10’ in the lower left corner, implying a date of 1910, is a mistake.
