1513 (ca.), Palma il Vecchio (Jacopo Negretti), The Assumption of the Virgin -- Gallerie dell'Accademia (Venice)
From the museum label: Against a serene hilly landscape awash in a warmly golden, late-afternoon glow, ten apostles witness the Assumption of Mary into Heaven. Saint Thomas, the only apostle not part of this group, is shown in the distance hurrying to join the others. Though rather unusual, we know that, before Palma, Lorenzo Lotto (sources tell us the two were good friends) had included this same scene in one of his paintings on a similar subject (the work is now at the Brera Pinacoteca). Legend has it that Thomas was given the Virgin's girdle to prove she had been assumed into heaven.
