1730 (ca.), Giulia Lama, Judith and Holofernes -- Gallerie dell'Accademia (Venice)

From the museum label: This painting shows an original interpretation of a Biblical subject: Judith seeking divine help before beheading Holofernes and freeing her people. The scene is highly theatrical: the nude body of the tyrant, here represented as a handsome beardless young man, is placed diagonally and illuminated by an intense artificial light. This effect deprives the pictorial description of the nude of any naturalism, emphasizing the expressionistic component of Lama's pictorial style.
