1578, Paolo Veronese (Paolo Caliari), The Annunciation of the Virgin -- Gallerie dell'Accademia (Venice)
From the museum label: Imagine the effect this painting must have had in its original place above the door of the assembly room in the confraternity of the Merchants. Symmetrically organized around a central arch opening onto yet another space, the scene would have made the beholders walking into the room feel as if they were stepping into the pictorial space itself: a scenographic solution making the encounter between the angel and Mary even more spectacular, as if it were set on a theatrical stage, set against perspectival scenery.
