1562 (ca.), Paolo Veronese (Paolo Caliari), Madonna and Child with Saints Joseph, Justina, Francis, the Infant John the Baptist, and Jerome (The San Zaccaria Altarpiece) -- Gallerie dell'Accademia (Venice)
From the museum label: Before the Holy Family, Saint Francis, the patron saint of Francesco Bonaldo, who commissioned the painting, has exchanged his cross with that of the infant Saint John the Baptist who represents a commemoration of Giovanni, Francesco's son who died prematurely in 1561. Saint Jerome on the right, instead, refers to his deceased brother Girolamo. Saint Francis's stigmata, the crosses, and the palm of Saint Justina's martyrdom on the left are references to the sacrifice of Christ celebrated at the altar, assuring the spiritual salvation of the Bonaldo family.
