1548, Jacopo Tintoretto (Jacopo Robusti), Saint Mark Saves the Slave from Torture (Miracle of the Slave) -- Gallerie dell'Accademia (Venice)
From the museum label: This masterpiece from Tintoretto's youth--signed bottom right--is extraordinary in its dynamic intensity, expressive force, and dramatic handling of light. The miraculous apparition of the Evangelist swooping into the scene causing the instruments of torture to break, nullifies the punishment that the Provençal lord (seated top right) wanted to inflict on his slave, guilty of having travelled to Venice to venerate the remains of Saint Mark.
