1541, Bassano (Jacopo da Ponte), Saint Anne with the Infant Virgin between Saints Jerome and Francis -- Gallerie dell'Accademia (Venice)
From the museum label: Conceptio Beatae Mariae, the inscription on the step in the altarpiece created for the altar of the Confraternity of the Immaculate Conception in the Franciscan church of the Reformed Fathers in Asolo, references the conception of the Virgin Mary without original sin and her purity, which are also alluded to by the flowers strewn on the steps. The compressed spatiality, the expansion of the figures in the foreground, the absence of atmospheric indications, and the severity of the colour palette based on an array of cold tonalities, all speak to the influence of Giovanni Antonio de Sacchis, known as Pordenone, and a reflection on the Roman works of Raphael and Michelangelo, which would have been available in print form.
