1548, Bassano (Jacopo da Ponte), Adoration of the Shepherds (detail) -- Gallerie dell'Accademia (Venice)
From the museum label: This work belongs to Bassano's early maturity, where the author's typical lively spirit of observation and description of nature is conjugated with a formal search for a mannerist approach, sign of a modernisation based on the innovations of Raphael, Michelangelo and Parmigianino, which he would have been familiar with through prints. Parmigianino's influence is particularly evident in the Virgin's elegant silhouette, the studied play of the veil covering her head, and the delicate gesture with which she reveals the Child's body to the shepherds. Warm, charred tones are alternated with cold, precious tones juxtaposed in areas of the canvas defined by vigorous brushstrokes.
