1780 (ca.), [Indian], Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana at the Hermitage of Bharadvaja -- Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York)

From the museum label: Rama, his wife, Sita, and his half-brother Lakshmana enter their fourteen-year exile as described in the Ramayana. They appear twice, first crossing the river and then seeking counsel from the sage Bharadvaja in his hermitage. The sage, seated in his forest shelter, tells them of an auspicious retreat frequented by great rishis (sages) that is both sacred and beautiful, where they might dwell for the duration of their exile. It is located in the Chitrakuta Mountains (upper right), on the banks of a lily pond. In this masterpiece of Kangra painting, the artist combined fidelity to nature with an illusionist approach to landscape, creating a dreamlike otherworld-a landscape of the imagination. The sophisticated vision reflects the quality achieved by the workshops of the Kangra court in the late eighteenth century.
