1871 (ca.), Edouard Manet, Repose -- Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) (special exhibition)

From the museum label: This is Manet's second major painting featuring Berthe Morisot, after The Balcony, on view in the previous gallery. Here, in her studio, she takes a decidedly more relaxed pose. Manet asked permission to exhibit the painting, which he described as a "study," in the Salon of 1871, but the event was canceled that year amid the chaotic aftermath of the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune. When it was finally shown in 1873, it was criticized for its lack of finish. Manet had expressed the same concern to Morisot about her own work.
