2005, Cecily Brown, Untitled (Vanity) (detail) -- Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) (special exhibition)

From the museum label: Untitled (Vanity) represents Brown's largest and most recognizable rendering of a woman at her vanity table. Seen from behind, this beauty stares at the viewer from her reflection in the mirror, and extends a delicate, gloved hand to bridge the gap between physical and reflected worlds. Based on a 1902 illustration of a stylish Gibson girl gazing at her reflection in a large, arched mirror, Brown's figure also merges with her reflection to form a death's-head, a skull that serves as a reminder that, no matter how youthful the subject, death is never far away.
