2020, Cecily Brown, Vanity -- Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) (special exhibition)
From the museum label: Over the course of her career, Brown has returned again and again to the image of the woman at her vanity. Recently she discovered the benefits of using a digital print of one of her own compositions as the ground in order to kickstart the process. As she has said, "This new process of actually painting on reproductions of my own and now other people's images makes so much sense after having copied them forever. It's like doing a cover of someone else's song." Here she renders her frequent illustrated source All Is Vanity (1902) in the pale blue and peach tones of late nineteenth-century French painting.
Link to other paintings from the “Cecily Brown: Death and the Maid” exhibition.
