1899, Mary Cassatt, Portrait of a Young Girl -- Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York)
From the museum label: Cassatt's striking portrayal of a fashionably dressed young model seated in a grassy, parklike vista was probably painted at or near the Château Beaufresne, the home the American artist purchased to the northwest of Paris in 1894, twenty years after she settled in France. Much like other fellow Impressionists, Cassatt drew inspiration from Japanese prints, engaging such compositional devices as the high vantage point and inventive cropping, while bringing her knack for perceptive characterization to the sitter in an intimate moment.
