1879, Paul Cezanne, Le Golfe de Marseille vu de L'Estaque (The Gulf of Marseille seen from L'Estaque) -- Musée d'Orsay (Paris)

From the museum label: L'Estaque, a small seaside village near Marseille, inspired Cézanne to create a dozen paintings. In 1876, he described the site to his friend Pissarro as follows: “It's like a playing card. Red roofs over the blue sea. [...] The sun is so frightening that it seems to me that the objects rise in silhouette not only in white or black, but in blue, in red, in brown, in purple”. The intense light and saturated colors of the south of France lead Cézanne towards new plastic research.
