1889, Vincent van Gogh, Van Gogh's Bedroom in Arles (detail) -- Musée d'Orsay (Paris)
From the museum label: Vincent decorated his room in the Yellow House in Arles in an "excessively simple" style with "large square furniture" made of white wood. This third version of the scene, which the artist announced he was sending to his brother in December 1889, was painted after he left Arles and was committed to a psychiatric hospital in Saint-Rémy. The first composition (Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam), in which he uses shades "suggesting rest and sleep generally", dates from October 1888, and the second version (Art Institute of Chicago) was painted in September 1889.
