1877, Claude Monet, La Gare Saint-Lazare (Saint-Lazare Station) -- Musée d'Orsay (Paris)

From the museum label: In early 1877, Monet painted the Gare Saint-Lazare twelve times. He was keen to be considered a modern painter and to capture what Zola called "the poetry of stations". The metal and glass architectural structure housing the steam locomotives opens out onto the city. The colour reflects the intense vibration of the light in a halo of smoke which softens the contours. This work foreshadows experiments with light in his Haystacks, Cathedrals and Water Lilies "series".
