1875, Claude Monet, The Coalmen -- Musée d'Orsay (Paris)

From the museum label: Industrial and urban development in the capital required a significant increase in supplies of raw materials. Here, Claude Monet depicts the work of coalmen as a form of a procession silhouetted against the light, in dark hues consistent with the subject matter. On a quay on the river Seine at the entrance to Paris, these labourers are unloading fuel for the gas plant at Clichy which provides light for the city. Above them, carriages and pedestrians are crossing the Asnières bridge, heedless of their backbreaking task.
