1888, Emile Bernard, Madeleine in the Bois d'Amour -- Musée d'Orsay (Paris)

From the museum label: Émile Bernard painted this large-format picture during a trip to Pont-Aven with his young sister Madeleine. Reminiscent of the recumbent effigies found in Christian funeral art, the rigid, sculptural silhouette of his model breaks up the verticality of the trees. The river Aven in the background in particular reveals the painter's experiments with Synthetism. He treats the reflections as large, flat areas of colour, as if they were positioned schematically on the water.
