1914, Alberto Magnelli, Paysan au parapluie (Peasant with an Umbrella) -- Pompidou Center (Paris)
From the museum label: Magnelli employs an elliptic figuration here that suggests rather than describes.
Peasant with an Umbrella combines geometric drawing, abstract blocks and a persistence of figurative drawing. The flat nature of the composition is underscored by the two black-coloured vertical elements framing the character. Though close to Futurist Florentine artists, Alberto Magnelli nevertheless distinguished himself radically from them with placid works, a far cry from the glorification of speed advocated by the Futurists.
