1906, Robert Delaunay, Paysage au disque (Landscape with disc) -- Pompidou Center (Paris)
From the museum label: Contrasting with a foreground of still realistic plants, the upper part of the painting prefigures Robert Delaunay's abstract work.
Concentric circles treated with thick touches of complementary colours form around a solar disc. The width of the slabs of colour excludes all optical blending and increases the vibratory intensity of the solar whiteness. Given that the star could not be represented directly, it is transposed in the form of a visual analogy. The formula of the chromatic disc will be developed in the "Circular Forms" series dating from 1913.
