1918, Giorgio De Chirico, Il Ritornante, hiver -- Pompidou Center (Paris)
From the museum label: Characteristic of the Intérieurs métaphysiques [Metaphysical Interiors] series, Il Ritornante depicts an indoor space containing figures and symbolic objects.
In this oppressive room with its low ceiling and partly open door, the enigmatic, revenant-like figure with closed eyes, resurrects the image of the artist's father. This unnerving columnar statue with its menacing shadow is standing next to a headless and dismembered dummy propped against of a collection of geometric instruments. The work was greatly admired by André Breton and featured in the first exhibition of "Surrealist paintings" in Galerie Pierre in 1925, before entering the prestigious collection of the couturier Jacques Doucet.
