1911, Natalia Goncharova, Le Paon (The Peacock) -- Pompidou Center (Paris)
From the museum label: The peacock, a legendary animal in Russian folklore signifying a female firebird, is a symbol of immortality that Goncharova appreciated for its solar and triumphal character.
This painting is part of an ensemble of nine panels entitled Harvest, freely inspired by the theme of the Apocalypse, Byzantine frescos and Russian folk images. In this cycle painted in the same explosion of violet, yellow, vermillion and ultramarine, punctuated by some accents of white, the artist celebrates Slavic folklore in a Rayonist style. Here the peacock, whose plumage fans out against a sombre background, seems to be covered, not with feathers but with bright colours that have a hypnotic effect on the spectator.
