1945, Georges Rouault, Passion -- Pompidou Center (Paris)
From the museum label: As often with Rouault, a profane motif has slipped into a religious context. Here, Georges Rouault uses the same compositional plan as in L'Accusé (1908), by inserting four heads around a central illuminated figure. In this piece, the face of Christ depicted in profile with more vivid colours and yellow highlights forever expels the grave darkness of Rouault's early courtroom paintings. The tragic effect of this biblical scene is accentuated by vertical yellow bars that lock Christ in with his judges in a fatal grid.
