1911, Natalia Goncharova, Les Ivrognes (The Drunkards) -- Pompidou Center (Paris)

From the museum label: Goncharova borrowed the mundane theme of drunkards from folk engravings.

Wishing to return to a primitive style of art free of all academism, Natalia Goncharova drew inspiration from the imagery of the loubki, prints comparable to the popular imagery that often illustrated Russian tales. The ternary rhythm applied to the houses, trees and dancers confirms this primitivism. This process imbues the scene with a joyful rhythm that is underscored by the vivid palette and the decorative elegance of the foliage.
