1906, Maurice de Vlaminck, Une Rue de Marly-le-Roi (A Street in Marly-le-Roi) -- Pompidou Center (Paris)

From the museum label: "My ardour allowed me all the audacity, all the impudence to neglect the conventions of the painter's trade." (Vlaminck) The boldness of the composition, slightly unbalanced, and the use of bright colours in this view of Marly-le-Roi is astonishing. The artist's discovery of Van Gogh's painting a few years previously had an influential effect on his work, but it was not until the summer of 1905, in Collioure with André Derain and Henri Matisse, that Maurice de Vlaminck developed this exuberant fascination with pure colours, as though applied directly from the tube. This work shows the theme of the street or road, which evokes his passion for bicycle and car racing.
