1912, František Kupka, Plans verticaux I (Vertical Planes) -- Pompidou Center (Paris)
From the museum label: "Rectilinear order appears to be the most vigorous, the most abstract, the most elegant and absolute." (Kupka)
For František Kupka, the notion of pure verticality was completely removed from any reference to nature. The rectilinear or slightly tilted plains, floating weightlessly in space, appear to be borne by a rising movement which gradually draws them into the distance. Plans verticaux / [Vertical Planes] was the first abstract composition acquired by the French State.
